Trail Riding in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee

No matter your personal preference, whether it is a horseback ride, carriage outing or even a hayride, you can fulfill your heart’s desire in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in east Tennessee. Within the park there are separate riding stables with their own unique qualities, but sharing the park’s desire to give good service. Some locations will permit a visitor to bring his own horse. If you feel unable to ride a horse, enjoy a horse-drawn buggy ride through Cades Cove.

Cades Cove is a popular site in the Smoky Mountains National Park with at least 2.5 million visitors each year to its 6,800 acres. At Cades Cove one can take a guided horseback ride on the valley floor for a great view of the local low country. This tour lasts about one hour. A 30-minute alternative would be the Cove’s horse-drawn carriage ride with 4 passengers per wagon. A 1-1/2 hour hay ride is also available on a truck-pulled wagon. Both of these rides are now wheelchair accessible.

Riding horses are also available at Sugarland Stables in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, as well as the Smoky Mountain Riding Stables, just 4-1/2 miles east of Gatlinburg. Sugarland Stables are located in a more preferred location of the park so they tend to be visited by larger crowds. Walden Creek Riding Stables offers the experience of an overnight horseback ride. This trip begins at 1:00 P.M., leads riders to a wonderful outdoor cooked supper, then an actual night ride followed by a late dinner around the campfire. After a good night`s sleep, there is an ‘open-fire’ prepared breakfast.
